SBTi seeks technical partner to advance buildings sector project
Sept 25th 2025
The SBTi is releasing a Request for Proposals for technical partner support on the Buildings Interoperability and Performance Frameworks Project.
The buildings sector is both a major contributor—and highly exposed—to the climate crisis. It is responsible for more than a third of global energy-related emissions and loses billions of dollars each year to construction delays caused by extreme weather. Recognizing this high-impact sector, the SBTi has launched a project focused on broadening the application of the Buildings Criteria across SBTi Standards.
As part of this effort, the SBTi is releasing a Request for Proposals for technical partner support on the Buildings Interoperability and Performance Frameworks Project. The project will examine how the SBTi Buildings Criteria and the Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2 work together to support practical and effective target setting in the buildings sector. This is an informative research project designed to support investigative analysis and will not impact current target-setting requirements under the Buildings Criteria V1.1.
The selected partner will conduct targeted research on:
- Connections between the SBTi Buildings Criteria and the Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2, including analysis of alignment challenges and enabling conditions across the buildings value chain.
- Performance frameworks and whether different instruments can credibly drive decarbonization in the buildings sector. This will include non-emissions targets metrics and building-level certification schemes.
The SBTi invites proposals from candidates with expertise in greenhouse gas accounting, decarbonization pathways, and the real estate and construction industries.
The project is expected to run from Q1 to Q3 2026, during which the technical partner will act in an advisory and support role. Candidates should review the full Request for Proposals (RFP) before applying. Details on how to apply are provided in section 5 of the RFP. All applications must be submitted before October 17, 2025.
