SBTi COP29: Upgrading the Architecture of Corporate Climate Standards
Delegates attending COP29 are invited to join the SBTi for a panel discussion titled "Upgrading the Architecture of Corporate Climate Standards."
Panelists will share insights on the current landscape, underlying processes, and future evolution of the standards that guide non-state climate action.
The session will explore how corporate climate standards are adapting to meet rising stakeholder expectations for greater accountability and ambitious climate action from businesses and will be followed by a short networking session.

Panelists:
Margherita Barbieri, Standards Manager, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)
Margherita leads the update of climate and energy standards, including topics such as GHG emissions, carbon credits, GHG removals, transition and adaptation strategies and just transition.
She holds an International Relations MA degree from the University of Turin, a teaching assistantship at the University of British Columbia (Canada) and has eight years of working experience in sustainability and marketing.
She led the circular economy initiative Scale 360° in Turin.
She is also part of Italian Climate Network, where she writes bulletins and article on climate (UNFCCC) and biodiversity (CBD) COPs policy takeaways for non-technical audience.
She was part of a "Sustainability and Circular Economy Task Force" at Lavazza Group to promote sustainability across different teams and sectors, dealing with CSR, circular economy, carbon neutrality, end of life management, responsibly sourced materials, and ESG.
She attended Oxford University's Saïd Business School "Leading Sustainable Corporations Progamme".
Her main interests include climate change, environment, biodiversity, the public and private cooperation, economic inequality, global affairs, international organizations, sustainability, the future of business and the role of corporations within the contemporary society.
Pankaj Bhathia, Director, GHG Protocol
Pankaj Bhatia is the Director of GHG Protocol. Pankaj is one of the leading experts and authority on the GHG Protocol standards and tools, particularly in the areas of corporate, scope 3, mitigation action and city accounting.
He launched and led the three-year global process that involved more than 2,300 stakeholders to develop the new GHG Protocol Scope 3 and Product Standard released in October 2011. He led GHG Protocol teams to develop new global standards for mitigation goals, policies and actions, the agriculture sector and cities, and to implement new GHG programs in key major economies including China, India and Brazil.
From 1998 to 2000, he was Vice President of Tata Energy & Resources Institute, a not-for-profit research organization based in Arlington, Virginia and affiliated to The Energy & Resources Institute (TERI), New Delhi, India.
From 1993 to 1998 he served TERI, New Delhi on various projects related to implementation of the Montreal Protocol in India and development of environment policy for technology transfer and capacity building in Indian industry.
He holds a Master in process engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and a Bachelors in chemical engineering from the Institute of Technology, Banares Hindu University, Varanasi, India.
Emily Faint, Senior Policy Manager, BSI
Emily Faint is the Net Zero Policy Manager at the British Standards Institution (BSI) and the Policy and Engagement Lead for the Our 2050 World collaboration. Emily manages the collaboration between the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the UN Race to Zero campaign and the UNFCCC Global Innovation Hub, convened by BSI.
Emily was a lead facilitator of the ISO Net Zero Guidelines International Workshop Agreement process and a contributing author to the UNFCCC Climate Champions Pivot Point report. Her interests are focused on net zero governance and the role of standards in accelerating the transition from voluntary to regulated action on net zero. Before joining BSI, Emily worked at the UK Government’s Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) as a Senior Policy Advisor on the UK’s Net Zero Strategy and governance.
Alberto Carrillo Pineda, Chief Technical Officer, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
Alberto combines over 15 years of experience in climate change mitigation and environmental protection often contributing to thought leadership in areas related to corporate climate leadership and the role of businesses in fighting climate change.
Alberto holds an MSc. in Environmental Change and Management from Oxford University and a BSc. in Chemical Engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

Francesco Starace, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
Francesco is a Partner at EQT, a global investment organization with EUR 126 billion in fee-paying assets under management within two business segments, Private Capital and Real Assets.
Francesco brings a wealth of industry experience from senior leadership positions, advisory boards, NGOs and public policy. As CEO of Enel, he was instrumental in driving the company’s efforts to phase out fossil-fueled energy production and invest in digital technologies, transforming it into one of the world’s largest renewable energy producers and the largest system of digitized electricity distribution grids.
Prior to becoming CEO of Enel, he headed Enel Green Power, the group’s renewable power generation company and a leading player in the global renewables industry from 2008 to 2014. In November 2010, he oversaw the initial public offering of the company and its listing on the Milan and Madrid Stock Exchanges with a market capitalization of €8 billion. Francesco is Chairman of the Board of the United Nations’ Sustainable Energy for All, a member of the Rockefeller Commission to End Energy Poverty and, in 2015, former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed him as a member of the Board of Directors of the United Nations Global Compact.

Tracy Wyman, Chief Impact Officer, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
Tracy joined SBTi in 2023 from Deloitte, where she led climate impact strategies and partnerships for North and South Europe. Over twenty years, Tracy has worked on initiatives at the intersection of business and social impact in the UK, the US, Southern Africa, and Southeast Asia.
In 2017 Tracy founded a social enterprise to give consumers and early-career job seekers insight into corporate social and environmental policies. Previously, she was Mozambique country director for GAIN, an international NGO engaging business for large scale nutrition impact. Tracy has also worked with major business associations on supplier development programmes, advised INGOs and bilateral donors on equitable economic development programmes, and acted as senior private sector development advisor to the Mozambican Ministry of Science and Technology.
Tracy holds an MSc in international development policy from University of Reading, an MBA from the University of Texas, and a BA in international studies from Ohio State University. Tracy is based in Bristol, UK.
