Draft Standard Chapter 6: SBTi Claims
Background and key concepts
This chapter introduces general criteria for substantiating claims related to science-based target setting and SBTi validation. The aim is to enable companies to substantiate claims related to their target-setting and target progress, and communicate their efforts in a clear and credible way. A company that has completed the performance assessment and set a new target will be able to make claims regarding their continuing progress to net-zero. The SBTi is exploring ways to recognize companies that have credibly met their targets, and how to highlight those showing leadership beyond the minimum requirements of target setting.
Companies ensure that all claims relating to this Standard are accurate, verifiable and adhere to high-integrity standards and applicable regulations.

6. SBTi Claims (CNZS-C35 and C36)
Chapter 6 of the updated draft Standard provides a simplified and more comprehensive set of claims that companies can make across the entire validation cycle, including conformance status and target claims. It sets out requirements for how companies can make credible, verifiable claims, and introduces the expectation that all claims undergo legal review to mitigate risks and ensure alignment with existing and emerging regulations and best practice. Annex D: Claims Language Template presents example claims currently under consideration.
