The SBTi Calls for Automotive and Power Sector Experts: Apply Now!
29th May 2024
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is seeking experts to act in an advisory capacity to support the development of 2024 priority projects. Apply for our Expert Advisory Groups (EAGs) today.
As part of SBTi’s mission to enable businesses worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis, we are developing a suite of sector-specific standards for high impact industries including automotive and power.
Following the Standard Operating Procedure for Development of SBTi Standards, we are calling for experts from corporates, finance, academia, research, government, non-profit and multilateral organizations - with expert knowledge of global climate change mitigation and science-based target setting - to apply to join the EAGs for these projects.
EAG members provide technical advice over the duration of a project. This volunteer advisory role helps to inform the development of practical and ambitious standards. Applications are assessed through an evaluation of relevant experience and qualifications. Potential conflicts of interest will also be evaluated as part of the recruitment process.
Those interested should read on to find out more and submit an application by July 17, 2024.
Driving change: Automotive Standard
Automakers are key to global mobility systems and the economy, but are also a major contributor of emissions. The biggest share (48%) of emissions from global transport are from cars and vans. Diesel and petrol vehicles are a major source of harmful air pollutants in cities around the world. In 2019 alone, air pollution caused 4.2 million premature deaths. The automotive industry has a pivotal role in driving the net-zero transformation and enabling a habitable planet for us all.
The SBTi is evolving its Land Transport Guidance into an Automotive Standard to align with our Corporate Net-Zero Standard, and incorporate best available practices for the sector to decarbonize. This standard will provide companies in the industry with 1.5°C sector-specific pathways and a target-setting tool covering automakers, autopart manufacturers, new light duty vehicles, new light commercial vehicles, new medium freight trucks, and new heavy freight trucks. Aspiring participants can read the EAG Terms of Reference (TOR) for the Automotive Standard and submit an application.
Catalyzing transformation: Power Sector Standard
Electricity plays a pivotal role in day to day life and the global economy. From lighting our homes and enabling manufacturing processes, to facilitating artificial intelligence and driving innovation in technology and infrastructure. Energy is responsible for more than 75% of total GHG emissions globally. Standing at the forefront of the net-zero transformation due to the expansion of renewable energy sources, the power sector has a critical role in tackling the devastating impacts of climate change.
The SBTi is revising its sector-specific guidance for electric utilities to update it into a Power Sector Standard. This standard will contain criteria and recommendations for companies operating in electric utilities and power generation to set 1.5°C-aligned near- and long-term science-based targets, within the unique context of the sector. We are seeking experts to join the project EAG and help shape the development of this standard. Those interested can review the TOR and submit an application.

SBTi’s rigorous process for developing standards, includes public consultation, review and approval by the independent Technical Council and formal adoption by the Board of Trustees.
Over the next 12 months, the SBTi will also open public consultations for external stakeholders to provide input into SBTi projects, including sector-specific standards and guidance for automotive, chemicals, electric utilities and power, finance (particularly for the Financial Institutions Net-Zero Standard) and oil & gas.
These multi-stakeholder consultations enable us to engage stakeholders and harness diverse perspectives to inform the development of clear, robust and practical resources. The aim is to support the corporate sector to decarbonize in line with climate science and the Paris Agreement.
We invite experts from various fields to submit applications to join SBTi’s EAGs, and help shape the future of corporate climate action. We will be opening calls for members for other EAGs in the coming months.
This collaborative effort is part of SBTi’s ongoing commitment to transparency, accountability and continuous improvement. To stay informed, sign up to our newsletter and follow the SBTi on LinkedIn and X (formerly known as Twitter).
