Global #ClimateActionDay Impact

19th Oct 2021

The first Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) #ClimateActionDay on Friday saw more than 750 companies from across more than 10 countries worldwide come together to celebrate ambitious 1.5°C-aligned climate action.

The day successfully showcased far-reaching and significant corporate support for bold 1.5°C-aligned climate action. It was also a strong call for more action ahead of the G20 Summit at the end of this month and the milestone COP26 conference at the start of November.

Global Calls for Action

Highlights from the day included a video compilation showcasing companies’ climate action and calling on more businesses worldwide to urgently commit to our Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign and align with near- and long-term science-based emissions reductions.

We saw support from UN High-Level Climate Action Champions Nigel Topping and Gonzalo Muñoz Abogabir, as well as large, globally recognized brands from a range of sectors and geographies - from Chile to Finland and the US to Australia. Companies including Nokia, BMW, McKinsey, Pfizer. PepsiCo CEO and Chairman. Waitrose, and Siemens called for more climate action ahead of COP26.

1.5°C-Aligned Action

Science-based targets are proven to deliver real emissions reductions from companies at the pace and scale required by science. Companies with verified targets are already on track to halve emissions between 2020-30 - exactly what climate science says is necessary.

Ahead of COP26 and with just eight years left to halve global emissions, it is vital that all companies across all geographies and sectors play their part in taking bold and urgent action to cut emissions.

The action and support demonstrated at the inaugural #ClimateActionDay was fantastic, but we need every company in every sector to show ambitious science-based climate action and call for similar action from peers and world leaders.

COP26 countdown is on

There is still time for more companies to commit to our urgent call for climate action ahead of the milestone COP26 conference. More than 150 companies have joined in just the last month, there are now more than 900 companies committed - help us to get past 1000! The deadline to be featured in the final numbers at COP26 is Thursday 28 October.

There is no time to lose. Join Business Ambition for 1.5°C now by signing and returning the commitment letter to commitments@sciencetargets.org.
