Help Shape the Future of Target Setting: The SBTi Opens Applications to Pilot its Chemicals Sector Criteria

2nd Dec 2024

Chemicals companies are invited to participate in SBTi’s pilot phase to test and help shape the Chemicals Sector Target-Setting Criteria and Tool. As part of the development process and in line with the Standard Operating Procedure for Development of SBTi Standards, this pilot is a critical step to inform the development of robust, clear and practical criteria.

Companies interested in participating must meet the requirements laid out in the Terms of Reference and submit their interest through this application form no later than January 10, 2025.

The SBTi is seeking participants from a broad range of chemical industry stakeholders including producers of primary chemicals and other base chemicals, manufacturers of intermediate and specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals and consumer chemicals, as well as those engaged in chemical recycling activities.

By joining the pilot, participants will use their own data, which will remain confidential, to test the Draft Chemicals Sector Criteria and Target-Setting Tool, help identify potential improvements and assess how feasible it is to implement the draft criteria and tool.

Following the pilot phase, the SBTi will conduct a thorough review of the feedback received and revise the Draft Chemicals Sector Criteria and Tool. Once updated, the criteria and supplementary resources will be presented to the SBTi Technical Council for review and approval. A report will also be published providing a summary of the feedback received, including key issues raised and how they were addressed.

After approval by the Technical Council, the Board of Trustees will consider the criteria for formal adoption. Once approved, the final Chemicals Sector Criteria and supplementary resources will be published for use.
