Public Consultation for the Steel Science Based Target Setting Guidance and Tool

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is developing science-based target setting methodologies, tools and guidance, to provide companies in the steel industry with the tools needed to align with science-based decarbonization pathways, and limit global warming to 1.5°C.

On November 23, the SBTi is opening a two month-long public consultation period to ensure the guidance and resources are robust, clear and practical.

The steel sector represents 7% of the global emissions from the energy system, and its demand by 2050 is projected to grow by approximately 12% by 2050 under a 1.5°C scenario. Meeting this demand while reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a significant challenge.

Companies in the steel industry have a critical role to play in the transformation to a net-zero economy, and preventing the catastrophic impacts of climate breakdown.
