RESEARCH AND TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT

Piera Patrizio is the SBTi's Head of Research.

Before joining SBTi, Piera held a Senior Research Associate position at the Centre for Environmental Policy (CEP) at Imperial College London. There, she worked on various national and international research projects investigating the potential deployment of CO2 removal pathways in the EU and the UK.

Since 2013, Piera has developed various optimization models and quantitative tools to investigate the techno-economic feasibility and ecosystems impacts of transitioning to low carbon energy systems. She has published more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific papers in this context, and she currently serves on the Advisory Board of iScience journal. Her work has been featured in news articles such as The Independent, BBC Word News, and Carbon Brief.

Over the last 4 years she has also provided quantitative evidence to members of the public and private sectors on the cost, scale-up barriers, and macro-economic impacts of decarbonizing fossil intensive industries, such as the mining industry, the cement and the iron and steel sectors and aviation.

Until 2019, Piera worked as a Research Scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA, Austria) with whom she continues to collaborate. She holds a PhD in Energy and Environmental Engineering and a BSc in Industrial Engineering, both from the University of Udine in Italy.
